Wasps are insects that are important to the ecosystem in that they use other insects for laying eggs and feeding off of them. But because of their intimidating look and aggressive behavior, and especially their painful sting which can cause some serious problems, wasps are often considered as pests and people try to get rid of them. Another reason for the human hostility towards these insects is that they often build their nests inside cavities in our homes.
How to remove wasp nest?
Wasp nest removal doesn’t necessarily need to be a dangerous thing. Except if you are allergic to wasps; then you should keep as far away as possible from them. In any other case, there are few simple tricks to do that. But first you need to know some things about wasps.
Wasps have a nasty habit of building nests close to our homes or even on them. And the interesting thing about them is that they always move to a new nest. When the wasp season starts, they never return to the old nest; instead, the queen builds a new nest and once their new home is done, the other wasps come and move in.
People who work with wasp nest removal often leave the nests intact once they destroy all the insects, because next season the wasps won’t come back to the same nest. Keep this in mind if you try to get rid of wasps by yourself – don’t concentrate on the nest, exterminate the wasps and the nest will remain an empty habitat.
For a successful wasp nest removal you will need several “weapons”: pesticide, protective headgear, thick protective clothing, a shovel, wet cloth or a towel and goggles. Don’t forget to block all the openings to your clothes so the wasps won’t get under them. Since the wasps are most active during the day, it is a good idea to remove the nest early in the morning or after sunset. Also, make a backup plan for hiding or escape if something should go wrong.
Get close to the nest as slowly as you can so you don’t draw attention to yourself. Look for the entrance of the nest and once you find it, pour the pesticide in the nest and quickly cover it with the wet cloth. That will keep both the wasps and the pesticide in, and it will allow the substance to work its magic and will prevent the wasps from escaping.
It is always better to perform this task with another person because you might not be able to move through every step quickly. If you have someone to do this with, make sure you divide equal responsibilities in order to do it in the most effective way.
If you are uncomfortable to use chemical pesticides, there are several organic alternatives that are available. The manner of use of these organic substances is the same as chemical pesticides, so the whole procedure remains the same. But no matter which kind of substances you use, it is best if the area surrounding the nest is not used or visited in the next 24 hours.
